TOP-10 POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL ON YOUR SKIN

10 EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL

1. It can cause rosacea
Over time, heavy drinking can cause permanent damage to your skin and one of the very noticeable effects that it can have is that it can cause rosacea. Rosacea is a skin condition that starts with a tendency to blush and can become a permanent redness to face and cause the capillaries to become visible under the skin. In severe cases, it can also lead to painful lesions on the skin.
2. It will age you prematurely
Many alcoholic drinks contain congeners which are the compounds that cause you to have a hangover. Although there has not been a great deal of research into the long term effects of congeners, it is widely believed that they do speed up the aging process. Whatever the precise explanation is behind it, there is no doubt that heavy drinker’s often do look a lot older than they actually are.
3. Sweet, mixed drinks will cause wrinkles
Alcoholic drinks that are mixed with sweet mixers, like coke, will give you a sugar overload that causes a condition known as systemic inflammation and this will lead to cell damage. Ultimately, that will lead to the skin losing its elasticity faster than it otherwise would and lead to the early onset of wrinkles.
4. It may cause cellulite
Many people believe that cellulite is aggravated by toxins and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol over leads your liver and toxins will build up in your body. Research into this area is a bit patchy too, but there is some pretty compelling evidence that does suggest there is a link between alcohol and cellulite.
5. Red wine can aggravate skin conditions
While it is often said that red wine is good for you and there is evidence that the antioxidants in red wine can help prevent heart diseases and slow the ageing process, there is also evidence that red wine can aggravate skin conditions. In one survey, 76% of people who suffer with intermittent rosacea said that drinking red wine caused the condition to flare up. Red win can also cause an increase in the release of histamine into the body, which can cause severe flushing.
6. It causes puffy eyes and dark circles
A side effect of alcohol is that it disrupts the REM sleep cycle and that will lead to puffy eyes and dark circles under the eyes. Alcohol also enlarges the small blood vessels in the eyes, which is what causes bloodshot eyes in the morning.
7. It dehydrates you and your skin
The dehydrating effects of alcohol are known to anyone who has ever had one too many and woken up the next day with a headache and a dry mouth, but that dehydration will also affect your skin. If you are dehydrated too often you will age faster and develop lines and wrinkles. It will also make your skin look dull and lifeless.
8. It damages the liver, which will show in your skin
Alcoholic drinks contain toxins that, over time, will damage the liver. In serious cases, that can lead to fatal liver damage, but even when the liver only has minor damage, it won’t be able to filter the toxins out of your body properly and that will lead to your skin looking pasty and it will make your pores look larger.
9. Drinks with salt will bloat you
Drinks like margaritas that have salt around the rim of glass will give you the double dehydrating effect of the alcohol and the salt, which will make hangovers worse and increase the effect that it has on your skin. Too many margaritas and the salt will also cause you to bloat. The effect may be only temporary, but it’s not a good look to have first thing in the morning.
10. Alcohol deprives your skin of essential nutrients
Alcohol also leeches vital nutrients out of your body, including the ones that are needed for healthy skin. If you drink too much on a regular basis, the lack of protein and vitamins getting to your skin will age you, make you look sallow, and you will have no colour in your skin.
